Ausangate Trek – Rainbow Trail | 6 Days
This breathtaking six-day trek through the Vilcanota Cordillera follows a route we call the Camino del Apu Ausangate, located near the highest and most sacred mountain in the Cusco region, known as an “Apu” in Andean tradition. Throughout the journey, our trek is supported by llamas and horses that carry our equipment. These animals belong to shepherds from the community of Chillca, who take pride in sharing their homeland with visitors and offering a glimpse into the spirit and traditions of their remarkable world. During our hikes—and in the comfort of our unique Tambos—daily meals are prepared by experienced chefs who showcase the rich flavors of Peruvian cuisine, featuring a variety of fresh local ingredients. In the evenings, the experience is often enriched with authentic vernacular music performed by local residents, bringing warmth and life to our nights in the tambos.
Daily Itinerary
An early departure takes us along the Vilcanota River in a comfortable coach, with a stop at the Temple of Checacupe before continuing through the upper Pitumarca Valley. From Japura, we set out on a short trek to Chillca, where local community members and musicians welcome us to our first Andean lodge with traditional music and warm coca tea. The lodge offers 8 cozy double rooms, each with a private bathroom and hot shower. Enjoy fresh, flavorful Andean cuisine — including specialties like alpaca steak — along with vegetarian and other dining options.
